Newbridge House launches Carers’ Group for parents
19 Jul 2010
Newbridge House has established a new Carers’ Group for parents and carers of young people who are treated within the centre.
The group is free and open to all parents and carers of young people currently in treatment and all those who have been discharged.
Meeting on the last Wednesday of every month, the evenings will be comprised of two main parts.
There will be a psycho-education session, led by a professional from Newbridge House, covering topics such as the physical consequences of eating disorders and a session run by our dietitian, exploring eating disorders and nutrition.
Following this more formal session, there will be tea, coffee and an opportunity to meet other parents and talk about their experiences.
“Sharing experiences is very important for parents,” explains Dr Melanie Stevens, Newbridge House Clinical Psychologist.
“Without a dedicated group for parents and carers of the young people we treat, there is little opportunity to share experiences and offer support.
“It is really beneficial for parents and carers to speak to people who are going through the same difficulties. We recognise the enormous pressure and anxiety caused by an eating disorder and how this affects the whole family.
“We welcome all parents and carers, both past and present, and hope as many as possible will be able to attend. The group will be flexible and responsive to their needs in order to offer as much support as possible.”
The Carers’ Group will take place from 6.30pm to 9.30pm at Newbridge House. For more information, please call Newbridge House on 0121 580 8362.
