Newbridge House helps to raise awareness of eating disorders at a Solihull school

13 Dec 2011

Newbridge House nurse consultant Rachel Matthews visited a Solihull school to help raise awareness and understanding of eating disorders.

Rachel was invited to attend the event at Lyndon School and Humanities College on December 7, which was organised by students themselves.

Together, they explored bulimia, anorexia and how the media affects young people and the way they view themselves.

Rachel said: “I was pleased to take part in this excellent event and particularly pleased that the event itself and ideas behind it came very much from the students themselves, working with the teachers.

“At Newbridge House, we treat young people aged 11 to 18 who have severe anorexia, so we are always pleased to be able to meet students within this age group and talk more generally about eating disorders and body image.

“It is very important to stress that if anyone – a young person or a friend or relative of a young person – has any concerns about eating disorders, they should seek professional help. Normally, the best first step is to see your GP.

“We know that with eating disorders, it is very important to seek help and begin treatment as early as possible.”
