Outpatient treatment
We offer an extensive, individually tailored outpatient therapy programme. The term ‘outpatient’ refers to people who need specialist therapy for an eating disorder, but do not have to come into hospital or a specialist facility for overnight care. Our outpatient programme involves coming to Newbridge House once a week for an individual programme of therapy to meet your needs.
How do I find out if outpatient therapy is right for me?
The first step is for one of our consultant psychiatrists to meet you, or your family member and carry out a full assessment of medical, psychological and nutritional well being and needs and how these needs can be addressed.
Outpatient treatment is suitable for the majority of patients with bulimia nervosa and for patients with binge eating disorder. Some patients with anorexia can be treated as outpatients, although others will require admission and the initial assessment is designed to identify the most safe and effective treatment for the individual. We offer outpatient therapy programmes for men and women aged 14 and above, with no upper age restriction.
Your programme of outpatient therapy will be based upon your individual needs. Our team of consultant psychiatrists and psychologists, who all specialise in the treatment of eating disorders, provide the full spectrum of therapeutic approaches.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is widely used and very effective in the treatment of bulimia nervosa. We used an approach specifically designed for people with eating disorders called CBT-E. A variety of approaches are used for anorexia nervosa including cognitive-behavioural, psychodynamic and supportive therapy. Family therapy is useful for younger patients.
What will an outpatient therapy programme involve?
Once an assessment has been made, a programme of therapy will be developed to meet your needs. This may involve coming to Newbridge House once or twice a week for therapy sessions.
Newbridge House is a residential setting in a suburban area, enabling people to access specialist help without the stigma of going to a more traditional mental health service. We offer evening therapy sessions, which may be more suitable for people who have work or educational commitments during the day.
We have newly-refurbished, purpose designed therapy rooms which offer a private setting, set apart from out inpatient programme.
The duration of therapy programmes is based upon individual needs and will vary, but will normally last for several months.
