NEWBRIDGE CARE is a new healthcare organisation led by Professor Hubert Lacey, establishing a premier range of services in Eating Disorders (ED). Professor Lacey is a very eminent name in eating disorders and the lead consultant at St George's Hospital in London, providing the biggest eating disorder centre in the UK and the second biggest in Europe.

We have identified a need for specialist residential care for young people aged 14 to 22 suffering from anorexia. The condition typically develops at puberty and young people often require treatment from the age of 14.

It is now widely accepted that specialist centres, led by experienced staff, offer the most effective treatment programmes. However, there is a lack of NHS provision dedicated to the treatment of eating disorders in young people.

Our unit, Newbridge House in Sutton Coldfield, is the first in the Midlands to specialise purely in eating disorders for young people. Our focus is on working as a multi-disciplinary team, providing good medical care combined with holistic emotional and therapeutic support for the residents. This includes working with the residents and their families and providing all the social, educational and psychological support they need to address the illness and develop as young people.

Our 20 bed unit has been completely refurbished and is tailor-made for eating disorders treatment. The majority of our patients are NHS funded.

We have three experienced NHS consultants, specialising in eating disorders, who have committed to manage the patients at the centre and we now need to secure a strong team, bringing a wide range of multi-disciplinary skills and experience, to provide the care to residents.

Your role

We are looking to recruit an additional motivated and creative occupational therapist to an established multi-disciplinary team at Newbridge House. The present occupational therapy service utilizes the Model of Human Occupation framework to provide a comprehensive assessment and treatment program at Newbridge House.

The scope of the occupational therapy intervention includes:

  • Individual work to explore how an individual’s motivation, habits, skills and home/social life is impacting on their day to day life.
  • Individual work to support individuals to identify barriers and to empower to set goals/work on positive changes to their lifestyle.
  • Lifestyle rebalance group
  • Leisure sampling
  • Food shopping
  • Cooking
  • Creative therapies: Projective Art and creative craft groups
  • Social eating group program
  • Community groups to target social skills, managing anxiety, lifestyle rebalance and encouraging social eating.

Previous experience of working with eating disordered patients is desirable but not essential as in-house training and clinical supervision is routinely provided. Newbridge House would encourage applications from people who have experience of using mental health and learning disability services.
