Redeveloped Eating Disorder Units

A major redevelopment project has been completed, creating a self-contained Garden House, new administration centre and therapy suite.

The two semi-detached houses next to the main house were purchased in 2014 and extensive redevelopment work on the two properties is now complete.

This has created significant extra space in the main house and at the same time, the Garden House (formerly consulting, meeting and administration rooms) has been fully adapted into a self-contained unit, with bedrooms, classroom, lounge and dining room.

Clinical Manager Rachel Matthews explains: “We now treat patients aged eight to 18, as one of only a small number of units who are able to care for the younger end of the age spectrum.

“One of the aims of the redevelopment work has been to create the space to allow us to accommodate our young people in distinctive units according to their age. The Garden House is fully contained so can be a unit for groups of younger patients, or, depending on our cohort, for a small group of older teenagers.”

Terry Peate, Business Manager for Newbridge House who has directed the project, said: “We are extremely proud of the high quality facility we have at Newbridge and the environment it provides. When our service was first established, back in 2008, Newbridge House was fully refurbished to meet the needs of young people.

“Four years after that, we extended the main building and created the Garden Suite, to meet growing demand for our services. Then in 2014, with the purchase of the houses next door, there was the opportunity to extend again and in so doing, create optimum space.

“We have thought it through on every level in consultation with both staff and young people – it is bright, airy, colourful and comfortable, designed wholly for young people to create a homely, therapeutic environment. Having this high quality physical space is integral to the overall quality of our service at Newbridge.”

The purchase of the houses also doubles the amount of parking space available.
